Hi Again!

Welcome to the new website! Yup that’s right. This is the new design I’ve been working on. My main idea behind the design was a simple and super fast theme that is fluid, accessible, could easily extended.

This is the part one of my relaunch. In the coming days, I’ll be revamping my about page, creating a complete portfolio, an extended archives page and perhaps a downloads and tools section. What’s also coming is a bilingual support for Chinese.

Also a little story about my upgrading process. As usual, I deleted all the old WordPress files but I accidentally deleted the wp-content folder which contained all the pictures, themes, and plugins. This sucked. But hopefully I can get a backup from Shane. In the meanwhile, all the screenshots and thumbnails will not be accessible. Sorry about that.

New Domain

Yay I’ve finally acquired jeffchan.net just a few minutes ago. It’ll redirect to jeffchan.org for now until I figure what to do with it. If you see this post and it doesn’t redirect, you need to flush your DNS cache.

I’ve been looking at this domain ever since it first expired in June. Most of you don’t know, when a domain expires, it goes through a very lengthy process before it actually becomes available. This domain was actually first released to what are called “back orderers” September 6th. A site parking site picked it up right away and dropped it a few days later. Then, another parking site picked it up right away and dropped it as well. What’s going on here is that they are testing to see if this domain gets any traffic. So during this period, I avoided directly going to “jeffchan.net”. You want to avoid giving them any traffic.

I didn’t really want to go with the .org back when I first created the site. But at that time, someone had this domain without any use. So I’m still thinking about whether to move everything to the new .net.

So now here it is in my hand, muhahah .

Note: As for the new blog design, it’s coming September 25th when Wordpress 2.3 is coming out, stay tuned!

It’s Complete!

The new blog design I’ve been talking about is now complete! I’ve tested everything on here and it works fine. You’ll see it live once Wordpress 2.3 rolls out probably end of September. Like I said last time, I’m abandoning the category system and using the tagging system and Wordpress 2.3 has an awesome tagging system. I’m also aiming for a Chinese version of my site as well as some AJAX features . Stay tuned!

Homework Sucks

Within the first week of school, I’ve been flooded with homework, especially AP homework. Stupid teacher had me up at four doing homework… None of my classes are interesting at all.

However, school stuff aside, I actually had fun playing poker last night. I also got a chance to play the Wii. It’s awesome.

And just a little update on the new version of my blog I’m working on. I have the design coded and everything. Right now I’m waiting for the release of Wordpress 2.3 (sometime in Sepetember), so I can take advantage of the new tagging system. It’ll be fun!

Tumblelog

I’ve been thinking about getting a tumblelog because I don’t have much time writing long blog posts but sometimes I really want to share some things. The only downside about getting one is that I don’t have full control over the my domain, because I’ll have to point the domain to the hosting server. The other thing about it is that there is no comment system, so I’m still thinking about whether or not to switch.

So what have I been up to…

1. Final exams this week. School is out Thursday.
2. Working on a big project for a client, building everything upon MyBB through the plugin system.
3. I have a research paper due Wednesday, tomorrow, and I haven’t even started.
4. Preparing for the Internal robotics Botball tournament.
5. Upgraded this blog to new version of WordPress.
6. Finished reading Fast Food Nation. I’m now reading At the Center of the Storm, My Years at the CIA by George Tenet. I love autobiography and nonfiction books like this one.
7. Lots of summer assignment for next year’s AP World History class.

Wordpress 2.1

I’ve taken the time to upgrade this site to Wordpress 2.1. Everything went smoothly except I had to update some old plugins and edit some files. The best feature I like from this new release is the separate comments section which allows better comment control. The other thing I really like is the included Akismet plugin which filters spam. I’ve been using this plugin for a long time and it’s been catching over 2000 spam comments for me. The autosave feature is really awesome. I’ve lost several drafts because browser crash or what not.

Back On A Schedule

Some of you may have noticed that my blogging rate has been decreasing over the past 3 or 4 months. I’m trying to get back on blogging with at least 3 to 4 posts per week. I want to expand my topics from tech and my life to perhaps my views on various topics. My goal also includes increasing the length of my posts. To do this, I might have to probably pre-write a few posts and store them (:P). So I’ll probably schedule posts and let Wordpress post them automatically.

You also may have noticed I tweaked the width of the content and sidebar so that the sidebar is slightly narrower and the content column is wider. This should be handy when I start increasing the length of my posts. I’m also starting to organize my categories.

It’s Been A Year…

It’s been a year since my first post. I totally forgot to post on Sept. 28 due to my heavy load of schoolwork. But anyways, just though I should make this post. Thanks to all those who are reading my blog. Sorry about the lack of updates.

Latest Attachment Plugin

Yes, my very first MyBB plugin. Someone requested on the MyBB forums and I made it. Even though I’ve made mods for MyBB previously, I had yet to write my own plugin. I was amazed at how easy it is to write a plugin. The plugin is currently waiting to be validated at mods.mybboard.com. You can download it here.

LATEST ATTACHMENT PLUGIN
This plugin displays the latest x number of image attachments from a certain forum at the header.

HISTORY
Ver 1.0 – Initial Release

*Enable or disable the gallery on index.
*Specify which forum to pull attachments from. You can also pull from all the forums.
*Ability to title to gallery.
*Ability to choose the number of images to display.

Yeah, I’m getting inactive at blogging primarily because of the heavy school work. and I never got around to work on the portfolio system and new theme I was talking about a month ago. Shame on me. It’s inevitable though. There’s just too much school work. I still have to read 3 more books and build a catapult.

MyBulletinBoard Version 1.2 Released

Yes MyBB 1.2 is released. Those who haven’t seen it should go check it out. It’s FREE.

The new version features tons of new features like cleaner code, AJAX edit, custom moderation tools, reputation system like EBay, multiquote, search improvement, plugin hooks in ACP, custom BBCodes, data handlers for extra security, and just tons more.

I’ve had no problems with it so far. It’s by far the best free forum software out there in my opinion.

In addition, I haven’t gotten any chance to work on the new site . There’s just too much school work. I will take a look again and reschedule my calendar. I really would like to have a new customized theme by the end of September.

Batteries Charged and Upgraded

Today I’m taking the whole day to just upgrade softwares, making changes, cleaning up hardrives, and gettings back on track of the things I’ve missed over the past two months. I’ve also just finished upgrading Wordpress and some other software.
On the other note, I’ve actually saw the Ubuntu billboard on 101 myself while driving(my dad driving) to the airport. Too bad it was at night and plus we were going at 80 mph. Didn’t get a good look at it.

New Domain and More!

You heard it right, I just got a new domain, jeffchan.org, and I figure I’d move everything onto there.
After a few days of thought, I’ve decided to change the blog name to The Jeff Channel for whatever reasons. The new slogan shall be “Jeff Channel, the only channel for Jeff Chan”. Thanks to trekkie for that. If you think you have a better idea, leave a comment.

I’m also thinking about a major new design that I’ll be starting from scratch. Much more coming soon.

Right now, the URL will remain jeff.rsbandb.com until a few days when the DNS are all updated. I’ve made an automatic redirection for all incoming links to http://jeff.rsbandb.com

Wordpress Security Fix & Structure

Wordpress 2.0.2, a security update release, was out today. As usual, I did the upgrade stuff and all that. Pretty simple.
In the mean time, I decided to update some my wordpress file structure.
Before I had all my blog files under my root directory, which was a mess. After doing some cleanup and code fix, I managed to get all my files onto /wordpress/ but still be able to access via the root directory. Now the root directory is nice a clean.
You may also notice the AJAX banner rotating script at the top (points to the top). It basically rotates banner ads in real time. (Why it’s called AJAX ) I couldn’t get the Google Ad to display for some reason. Probably Google ad requires the ad to be loaded when the page is loaded.
You can request a banner of the size 468*60 pixel to be put at the top by sending an email to me. In exchange, you’ll have to link back to me with my buttons or text link.

That’s all I guess.
